Anger Doesn't Make You A Bad Person.

But What You Do With It Matters

Anger is a normal human emotion. The problem isn't necessarily that you get angry, it's what happens when anger starts controlling your reactions, relationships, decisions or life.

You might find yourself yelling, shutting down, becoming defensive, saying things you regret, losing your patience over small things or feeling like your anger goes from zero to one hundred before you have time to stop it.

Or maybe you don't yell at all.

Sometimes anger looks like withdrawing, becoming cold, holding grudges, constant frustration, resentment, sarcasm or feeling like everyone else is the problem.

Colin Auschrat, MA, Registered Psychologist, provides online anger management counselling for adults throughout Alberta & Northwest Territories.

Together you can work toward understanding where your anger comes from, recognizing what happens before you lose control & developing healthier ways to respond when life pushes your buttons.

Understanding Your Anger

We look beyond the anger itself to understand the situations, thoughts, emotions & patterns that contribute to your reactions.

Recognizing Your Triggers

You can learn to identify the warning signs & situations that tend to push you toward anger before your reaction reaches the point of no return.

Emotional Regulation

Counselling can help you develop practical strategies for managing intense emotions without suppressing them or allowing them to control your behaviour.

Managing Conflict

Learn ways to slow down conflict, communicate more effectively & respond without automatically escalating the situation.

Relationship Anger

When anger is affecting a partner or family member, counselling can help you understand the cycle you're caught in & begin changing your part of it.

Stress & Frustration

Sometimes anger is amplified by chronic stress, work pressure, parenting demands or feeling like you are carrying too much.

Anger & ADHD

For some adults, difficulties with impulsivity, frustration, tolerance & emotional regulation can make anger particularly challenging. Counselling can help you understand these patterns & develop strategies that fit your individual needs.

Anger After Trauma

Past experiences can influence how we respond to perceived threats, criticism, rejection or conflict. Counselling can help you explore these patterns safely & develop healthier responses.

Moving Beyond Shame

Feeling bad about your anger can become part of the cycle. The goal isn't to label you as an "angry person". It's to understand the behaviour, take responsibility for it & create the possibility for change.

Is Anger Management Only For People With "Anger Issues"?

Not at all.

Many people seek counselling because they recognize a pattern they don't like & want to change it before it creates bigger consequences.

  • You might be coming because your partner is frustrated
  • Your employer has raised concerns
  • Your family has noticed a change
  • You keep having the same argument
  • You're simply tired of reacting in ways that don't reflect the person you want to be

You don't have to wait until your anger becomes a crisis to work on it.

What To Expect From Anger Management Counselling?

  1. Start With Your Story: Your first sessions are about understanding what's happening, what brings you to counselling & what you want to change.
  2. Identify Your Anger Cycle: Together, you'll look at triggers, thoughts, physical responses, emotions & behaviours that contribute to your particular anger pattern.
  3. Understand What's Underneath: Where appropriate, counselling may explore the emotions, experiences, relationship patterns or stressors that contribute to anger.
  4. Build Practical Skills: You'll develop strategies for recognizing escalation, regulating emotions, communicating differently & responding more intentionally.
  5. Practice Change In Real Life: The work doesn't stop when the session ends. The goal is to help you apply what you're learning to the situations that actually make you angry.

Meet Colin

A Practical, Person Centered Approach To Understanding Anger

Colin provides online counselling for adults across Alberta & the Northwest Territories, & specializes in anger management, relationships, conflict, trauma, ADHD, emotional concerns & life transitions.

His work is grounded in understanding the person behind the behaviour rather than simply trying to eliminate the behaviour itself.

That means asking questions such as:

  • What happens before you get angry?
  • What does anger protect you from feeling?
  • What patterns keep showing up?
  • What happens in your relationships when anger enters the room?
  • What would you like to do differently next time?

The goal isn't to make you never feel angry.
The goal is to help you have more choice in what happens next.
